The Punjab government has extended winter holidays for all schools across the state in view of the intense cold wave and dense fog conditions. The decision has been taken under the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, prioritizing the health and safety of students.
According to the official announcement, all government, aided, recognized, and private schools in Punjab will remain closed till January 7. Regular academic activities will remain suspended during this period.
Punjab has been experiencing a sharp drop in temperatures over the past few days, accompanied by heavy fog during morning and evening hours. These weather conditions have significantly reduced visibility and increased health risks, especially for young children who commute early in the day.

State authorities stated that keeping schools operational in such extreme weather could endanger students’ health, which prompted the extension of holidays. The move is aimed at preventing cold-related illnesses and reducing travel risks for students and school staff.
The government further clarified that schools will reopen from January 8, provided weather conditions improve. However, if the cold wave intensifies further, the situation will be reviewed and additional decisions may be taken accordingly.
Parents and educators across the state have welcomed the decision, calling it a timely and responsible step in the interest of children’s safety.
