Sam Manekshaw, also known as Sam Bahadur (“Sam the Brave”), was an Indian military leader who served as the Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. He was the first Indian army officer to be promoted to the rank of field marshal.
Early Life and Military Career
Sam Manekshaw was born on April 3, 1914, in Amritsar, Punjab, India. He was the sixth of thirteen children. His father, Jehangirji Manekshaw, was a Parsi teacher, and his mother, Toni Manekshaw, was a homemaker.
Manekshaw was educated at St. Xavier’s School in Amritsar and Sherwood College in Nainital. He joined the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun in 1932 and was commissioned into the 5th Gurkha Rifles in 1934.
During World War II, Manekshaw served in Burma, where he was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery. After the war, he remained in the army and rose through the ranks, becoming the Chief of the Army Staff in 1969.
Indo-Pakistani War of 1971
In 1971, India and Pakistan went to war over the issue of Bangladeshi independence. Manekshaw, as Chief of the Army Staff, was responsible for leading the Indian army to victory.
